When fitting mouldings, always mitre external corners and scribe or mitre internal corners rather than butting pieces square - a properly fitted mitre will close up neatly as the timber expands and contracts seasonally. Prime all faces and edges of bare timber mouldings before painting for a durable, professional finish.
