Handrail

The handrail is the primary safety feature of any staircase, providing the essential grip surface that users rely on when ascending and descending stairs. At McMahons, we stock Burbidge handrails in pine and American white oak, providing options for both painted and natural timber finishes across all common domestic staircase styles.

Our Handrail Range

  • Pine handrail 4.2m - a softwood grooved handrail for staircases where a painted finish is planned, offering a cost-effective option that matches other painted Burbidge pine balustrade components. Ready to paint, stain, or varnish to the required colour and sheen level on site.
  • White oak handrail 4.2m x 41mm - a premium American White Oak hardwood handrail with a 41mm groove profile for use with compatible spindles and stair components. Responsibly sourced, planed to a smooth finish, and designed to complement other oak stair parts for a cohesive, high-specification natural wood staircase. Suitable for oiling, staining, or lacquering for a durable hardwood finish.

The 41mm groove profile accepts compatible Burbidge square spindles, with the spindle tops locating into the groove to maintain consistent spacing and a secure connection throughout the handrail run.

Complete your staircase with compatible components from our Baserail, Spindles, Newel Post, and Newel Caps ranges from the Burbidge system.

Building Regulations require handrails to be installed at a height of between 900mm and 1000mm measured vertically from the pitch line of the stair. Ensure handrails are continuous throughout the full stair run and are graspable in cross-section - the oval or D-profile of a grooved handrail generally meets this requirement for domestic stairs.
