When fixing a newel post, the connection to the structure must be rigid enough to withstand the lateral loads imposed by users gripping and leaning on the handrail. For timber stringer staircases, bolt-fix the post through the string using coach bolts with a washer plate on the inside face. For concrete or steel landings, use a suitable base plate and anchor bolt system rather than surface adhesive alone.
