Baserail

The baserail is the horizontal timber member that runs at the base of a staircase balustrade, holding the spindles securely in position and connecting them to the structure of the staircase. At McMahons, we stock Burbidge pine baserails in two standard lengths to suit most domestic staircase configurations.

Our Baserail Range

  • Pine stair baserail 2.4m x 55x22mm - a standard-length grooved pine baserail suitable for shorter staircase runs and landing balustrades, providing a routed groove to locate and secure the bottoms of square-section spindles at the correct spacing.
  • Pine stair baserail 4.2m x 55x22mm - a longer baserail for staircases with more steps or longer landing runs where a single length avoids a joint mid-run, providing a continuous, strong base for the full balustrade span.

The baserail groove is sized to accept compatible Burbidge square spindles. Both lengths are supplied in bare pine ready to paint, varnish, or stain to match your chosen interior finish.

Complete your balustrade with matching components from our Handrail, Spindles, Newel Post, and Newel Caps ranges from the same Burbidge system.

When fitting a baserail to a staircase, cut the rail to follow the rake angle of the stair string precisely so that the spindles sit vertical when installed. Always fix the baserail securely to the string or a newel post at each end rather than relying on the spindles alone to carry the lateral load of the balustrade.
